Background
This website presents the data I
have gathered on the terminal performance of various bullets. These data have mostly been gathered for my
own purposes but I feel that other shooters may benefit from it. The limitations on my methodology and
measurement techniques are specified in the following pages titled “Methods” and “Data explained”.
Having held a long term interest in rifle shooting and ballistics, it became apparent that effectiveness at stopping game depended upon two main factors – accuracy (placement) and terminal ballistics (projectile performance on game). It also became apparent that although most other aspects of ballistics are well known and reasonably documented, there seemed to be little information regarding terminal ballistics. Even projectile manufacturers provide only very broad ideas of what a user might expect.
Anecdotal information is unreliable due to both its very nature (human derived inaccuracies) and the huge variables involved in hunting situations.
I wanted to KNOW how the performance of various projectiles compared. To achieve this I have utilised two main methods, these being:
This website does not attempt to compare cartridge performance or provide information on external ballistics. In order to assess how their loads may compare with the data presented here, the user should at least be aware of the estimated impact velocity of their loads at various ranges. There is plenty of loading and ballistic data available these days so that anyone who is curious can easily find this information.

- Testing
bullets with a standardised methodology using wet paper; and
- Extracting
bullets from game where possible.
